Perlmutter Cancer Center Partners With Top Cancer Centers To Endorse Goal Of Eliminating HPV-Related Cancers In The U.S.

Nearly 80 million Americans are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV), and of those millions, more than 31,000 will be diagnosed with an HPV-related cancer this year. Still despite the availability of a vaccine to prevent the infections that cause these cancers HPV vaccination remains unacceptably underused in the United States.

To accomplish the goal of increasing prevention and eliminating multiple HPV-related cancers, the Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health has partnered with 69 other National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers to amplify their message, urging increased HPV vaccination and screening beginning with cervical cancer.

Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center, spoke out on the initiative, “strongly [calling] upon the nations’ physicians, parents, and young adults to take advantage of this rare opportunity to prevent many types of cancer.”
