Nearly 80 million Americans are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV), and of those millions, more than 31,000 will be diagnosed with an HPV-related cancer this year. Still — despite the availability of a vaccine to prevent the infections that cause these cancers — HPV vaccination remains unacceptably underused in the United States.
To accomplish the goal of increasing prevention and eliminating multiple HPV-related cancers, the Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health has partnered with 69 other National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers to amplify their message, urging increased HPV vaccination and screening — beginning with cervical cancer.
Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center, spoke out on the initiative, “strongly [calling] upon the nations’ physicians, parents, and young adults to take advantage of this rare opportunity to prevent many types of cancer.”
