Never Let Anyone Define Your Brand But You

There’s a well-known quote from Jeff Bezos: “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” The challenge with that definition is that in today’s world of faceless social media accounts — where bots, trolls and critics can speak without consequence — it’s easy to mistake tumult for truth.

A strong brand is not shaped by external forces. It is guided by the clarity of its own purpose.

For leaders navigating the complex voices of today’s marketplace, here are four reminders, with examples of brands that chose to lead on their own terms:

1. Own Your Purpose

Patagonia remains privately held and recently moved all stock to an environmental trust and nonprofit, ensuring its long-term commitment to the planet outweighs short-term demands for profit.

2. Map Your Future

CVS chose to stop selling cigarettes, advancing its role as a health company and reinforcing its promise to customers and communities.

3. Stay the Course

Despite calls for boycotts, Nike stood firm in its support of Colin Kaepernick, knowing its brand is about athletes who embody principle and perseverance.

4. Never Stop Moving

Starbucks is always evolving, as its recent launch of protein-packed drinks reminds us. From new products to digital platforms to in-store experiences, every initiative serves its enduring mission to nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.

Great brands are dynamic. They adapt, evolve and grow with intention. They are responsive, but always with purpose. They are resilient enough to withstand external pressures and move forward with courage and conviction — no matter what.

So let others talk. Listen, but don’t lose yourself. Because at the end of the day, the most authentic voice that defines your brand is your own.
